Take Care of Your People

Written By: Lauren Howard

I have no proof that I’m a good boss.

There really isn’t a good way to officially measure that part. I guess some companies do employee satisfaction surveys, but there are just lots of ways that those can be rife with problems and incentives to report that everything is well.

Then I get things like this that make me think that maybe, just maybe, I’m onto something.

A few times a week, I get pinged by people who don’t even work for me anymore who want to vent or get perspective on their situation. They pick me to be the sounding board even though we don’t even work for the same company.

Probably because I listened in the past. That’s really it.

The flexible work policy. The demands that you take your PTO. The full rejection of toxic environments. The support for you, all of you, and who you want to be for everyone who works for me and with me—I really do mean all of that. The internet doesn’t exactly have a way to know if that's just performative nonsense while I’m a full tyrant behind the scenes.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m terrible in lots of ways, but I might just be getting this small thing right.

Take care of your people. They won’t take advantage of it, and they won’t forget it.
