It still haunts me the time I told my manager about my pregnancy. I was A type analyst. I would always get my work done ahead of time, so much so that my manager struggled to keep me busy. Yes, he was one of those micromanagers. I had been with the company for more than 2 years. I had joined a new team in the same company few months ago.
Since I joined a new team, I didn't want to surprise my team at the last minute, and give them ample time to plan for what's coming, however, here is what I heard from him
"You are sick. Your boyfriend or husband should be telling you to quit your job rather than asking for pregnancy leave. If everyone keeps taking leaves like this, how are we going to do our work".
I was STUNNED. I couldn't fathom how could this happen to me. First of all, why should I ask my husband?
NEVER in my life my parents or husband stopped me from doing what I do. If I want to quit, I will quit. Second, what kind of manager can't manage the unexpected that too for a genuine reason like this? Anyway, I realized what a sexist he was, I felt sorry for his girlfriend or wife and daughters. It was TERRIBLE and I still feel sorry for the team he manages.
BUT the biggest outcome was I learned NEVER to be that manager. I learned how to be in someone's shoes and empathize for what they are going through and how one act of kindness can CHANGE their life!
Maybe for the first time in my life…. I am without words.
Like, actually, without words.
Okay. I found some words.
WHAT THE ACTUAL FAHHHHHHHHHHCK.
You need someone’s permission to work while pregnant? Pregnancy is an illness? You’re required to do what your boyfriend or husband tells you in reference to your job? What if you just decided that you wanted to have a child without a man in the picture? Would his head just explode all over the wall at the thought of having to handle waves arms that scenario?
You should have been stunned. It’s not 1950 anymore. Sorry that my uterus and maintaining the population of the earth is an inconvenience for you, dude. Here are some temp agencies so you can get someone to cover me while I’m gone.
Having a baby. BRB.
Glad you’re out of there. You deserve better. And, as much as I hate that it happened to you, I am glad that other people get the benefit of what you learned.
